Living Apart Together: What it Means for Seniors

As boomers continue to age, new trends and choices for where to live and whom to live with are emerging. We cover many alternative senior communities that are springing up. Now, there is evidence that the definition of a couple is being explored and challenged as well.

The Canadian news video below discusses Living Apart Together or LAT. This means that a couple with expectations of monogamy choose to live in separate residences rather than in the same home. This is a pattern in younger adults who are not sure of commitment, but there is a growing group of elders who may be widowed, divorced or recently single who decide this is the option for them. They may be motivated by financial concerns or family pressure. The implications for a partner who may need caregiving in the future could be enormous.
